What FAQ markup does now

01

Don’t expect the drop-downs

Google cut FAQ rich results back to a few government and health sites in 2023, and they stopped appearing in May 2026. Adding this markup won’t change how your result looks.

02

Why add it anyway

It’s still valid structured data, and it tells any machine reading the page exactly which text is a question and which is its answer. It’s cheap to add; just don’t expect a ranking lift from it.

03

The one rule

Every question and answer in the markup must also be visible on the page. Marking up text people can’t see breaks Google’s structured data guidelines.

02 Questions

What people ask

Where do I paste the code?

Anywhere in the page’s HTML, usually the head. In WordPress, most SEO plugins have a box for custom schema, or will write FAQ markup for you from an FAQ block.

How do I check it works?

Paste the page address into Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Both will flag errors.

Can I use HTML in answers?

Google accepts a few tags, such as links, lists and bold. Plain text is safest.
