What makes a good slug
Readable words
Google recommends simple, descriptive words in URLs, so a person can tell what the page is from the address alone.
Hyphens, not underscores
Google’s guidance is to separate words with hyphens. It reads underscores as joining words together.
Leave live pages alone
A slug matters far less than the content. Changing one on a page that already ranks means a redirect and a period of disruption, so only do it with a good reason.

02 Questions
What people ask
What is a slug?
The last part of a web address, after the final slash. In /blog/how-seo-works the slug is how-seo-works.
Should I remove words like “the” and “and”?
If the slug still reads clearly, yes: shorter is easier to share. If removing them changes the meaning, keep them.
Do keywords in the URL help rankings?
Only slightly. They help people more than Google: a clear address is more likely to be clicked and linked to.
